Cobblemon

Cobblemon turns Minecraft into a Pokémon adventure without leaving your survival world. Wild Pokémon spawn across the biomes, you craft Poké Balls from apricorns to catch them, and battles follow the same rules competitive Pokémon players use. The ones you keep can be raised, evolved, ridden or left to roam in pastures, and friends can battle and trade on a shared server.

About Cobblemon

Cobblemon brings Pokémon into Minecraft: Java Edition as an open-source Fabric and NeoForge mod, developed by the Cobblemon team. Pokémon spawn in the world alongside ordinary mobs, and you catch them in balls crafted from apricorns, battle with rules taken from Pokémon Showdown, level and evolve them, ride some of them and let others roam in pastures, all inside a regular survival world rather than a separate game mode. The team's stated aim is the Pokémon mod for everyone, one that fits into modpacks and into Minecraft itself.

Which Minecraft version you need

The current release, 1.8.1 from 12 September 2026, runs on Minecraft 1.21.1 and nothing else, on Fabric or NeoForge. That surprises players who arrive on 26.x: there is no Cobblemon for any newer Minecraft version, so a 1.21.1 profile is the only way to play the current mod. The team's own installation guide says the same.

Older lines still exist for older game versions. Cobblemon 1.5.2 runs on 1.20.1 with Fabric or Forge, and 1.3.2 on 1.19.2. They predate a lot of today's mod: the Pokédex, fishing with Poké Rods and double battles arrived in 1.6, riding in 1.7, and alphas and TMs in 1.8. They only make sense for an existing modpack or world that cannot move.

The first hour

Each player starts by choosing a starter Pokémon on the starter selection screen, redesigned in 1.8. From there the loop is familiar from the games, rebuilt around Minecraft's crafting:

  • Poké Balls are crafted. The basic ball takes four red apricorns and a copper ingot, and apricorns grow on trees you find in the wild. Better balls need iron, gold and eventually diamonds or netherite. Apart from Net, Dive and Lure Balls, which appear as loot in shipwreck coves, every ball has to be crafted.
  • Weaken, then throw. Select a ball in the hotbar and throw it at a Pokémon. A failed catch breaks the Pokémon out and the ball is lost, so fighting it first with your own Pokémon pays off.
  • Party and PC. Caught Pokémon join your party, or go to the PC when the party is full. Holding R and scrolling moves through the party, as 1.8 now reminds new players.
  • Healing takes charge. The Healing Machine, crafted from copper, iron, a Max Revive and redstone, starts empty when placed in survival and charges over time.
  • Fishing turns up Pokémon too, with a Poké Rod made from a smithing template, a fishing rod and a Poké Ball. Each type of ball gives a differently themed rod.
  • Medicine is brewed. Crops and berries go into an ordinary brewing stand, and berries can be grown on farmland and cross-bred into new kinds.
  • The Pokédex is a craftable item. It records what you have seen and caught, and can scan wild Pokémon for details.

Battles

Battles run on the Pokémon Showdown engine, the same one used for competitive play, so moves, types and abilities follow the games' own rules. Around that engine the mod borrows ideas from Pokémon Legends: Arceus. You can relearn moves, run from a battle by physically walking away, and evolve a Pokémon when you decide rather than the moment it qualifies. With free movement toggled on, you can keep building, mining or fighting mobs while a battle is in progress. Double and triple battles are supported, and you can battle and trade with friends in multiplayer.

Every species from generations 1 to 9 can spawn and be battled. Species that do not have a model yet appear as a substitute doll, which is expected behaviour, not a missing texture.

What the 1.8 update added

Version 1.8.0, the "Make Your Move" update from 6 September 2026, is the largest recent change and the reason older guides are now incomplete:

  • Alpha Pokémon: bigger, stronger, more aggressive, always leading a herd, always knowing a TM move, and able to adapt to beat your party. Beating one pays out rewards, and catching one is possible too.
  • TMs and the TM Machine. TMs are made from elemental type gems grown from new crystal blocks, and a recipe unlocks once one of your Pokémon knows the move. Config options can make TMs reusable or unlock every recipe at once.
  • A Move Dex in the Pokédex showing which Pokémon can learn which moves.
  • 49 habitat structures where rarer Pokémon spawn, sometimes different ones on different days, and a Habitat Block that lets server owners and map makers control spawning in an area.
  • More rideable Pokémon, among them Crobat, Skarmory, Milotic, Goodra and Archaludon, plus around forty newly added species and many new models and animations.

1.8.1 followed a week later with fixes, including a world generation stall caused by type gem clusters and several Poké Balls whose catch bonuses were calculated wrongly. Anyone who installed 1.8.0 should update.

Multiplayer and servers

Cobblemon has to be installed on the server and on every player's client, and the versions should match: a 1.8.1 client and a 1.8.0 server is asking for trouble. Players on Fabric need a Fabric server, players on NeoForge a NeoForge one. There is no official Cobblemon server. The team keeps a list of community servers on its website and Discord, and any host that runs Fabric or NeoForge for 1.21.1 can run your own. Minecraft 1.21.1 itself needs Java 21, which matters when you set up a server by hand.

Fabric or NeoForge

Both are supported, and the team recommends Fabric for performance. The difference in setup is one library: Fabric needs Fabric API, NeoForge needs Kotlin for Forge. A NeoForge setup makes sense when the other mods you want are NeoForge-only. Choose the loader first, since a world and its mod list should stay on one loader.

Biome mods, datapacks and addons

Spawning is tied to biomes, and the team lists support for biome mods such as Terralith, Oh The Biomes You'll Go and William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld, with others added over time. Custom species, variants and fakemon can be added through datapacks and resource packs, and the team publishes a guide to doing it. Check an addon's page for the Cobblemon version it targets before adding it to a 1.8 world. The official modpack, on Modrinth and CurseForge, bundles the mod with Cobbled Farms, the team's interactive tutorial map that introduces each system in turn. Larger packs build on it too: All the Mons, a variant of All the Mods 10, integrates Cobblemon into that kitchen-sink pack.

Both the released mod and its code use the Mozilla Public License 2.0, so forks are allowed as long as they keep that licence. The project also states that it has no affiliation with Pokémon or with Minecraft.

Cobblemon needs a Minecraft 1.21.1 profile with Fabric or NeoForge, one library, and the same setup on any server you play on.

How to Download Cobblemon for Minecraft

In the Cobblemon Downloads section, set the Minecraft version to 1.21.1 for the current release and pick Fabric or NeoForge. The Download button on that row goes to the team's file on Modrinth. The 1.20.1 and 1.19.2 rows are the older 1.5.2 and 1.3.2 releases for existing worlds.

How to Install Cobblemon in Minecraft

  1. Create a Minecraft 1.21.1 profile and install Fabric or NeoForge for it. Use the recommended loader version for 1.21.1. Run the profile once.
  2. Put the Cobblemon jar and its library in the profile's mods folder: Cobblemon plus Fabric API on Fabric, or Cobblemon plus Kotlin for Forge on NeoForge, each built for Minecraft 1.21.1.
  3. Start the game, create a new world and choose your starter Pokémon.

The modpack route

The team also publishes an official Cobblemon modpack, which installs the right Minecraft version, loader and dependencies in one step and includes the Cobbled Farms tutorial world. The team suggests the Modrinth App for it, with Prism Launcher as an alternative. The modpack installation guide covers the process.

Updating an existing world

Back up the world folder before moving to a new Cobblemon release, and replace the old jar rather than adding the new one beside it. Keep the world on the loader it started on.

Playing with friends

Install the same Cobblemon version, loader and library on the server, then give every player the identical set. A server without Cobblemon cannot host Pokémon, and a client without it cannot join a Cobblemon server.

If it will not start

  • Wrong Minecraft version: the current Cobblemon loads only on 1.21.1.
  • Missing library: Fabric API on Fabric, Kotlin for Forge on NeoForge. The log in logs/latest.log names what is missing.
  • Wrong loader: the NeoForge file will not load on Fabric or the reverse, and 1.8 has no Forge build.

For anything else, see mods that are not working.

FAQ

What Minecraft version does Cobblemon use?

The current release, Cobblemon 1.8.1, runs only on Minecraft 1.21.1. Older releases exist for 1.20.1 and 1.19.2, and there is no Cobblemon for Minecraft 26.x.

Is Cobblemon on Forge?

Not the current version. Cobblemon 1.8 is for Fabric and NeoForge. Forge builds stop at Cobblemon 1.5.2 for Minecraft 1.20.1.

Does Cobblemon need Fabric API?

On Fabric, yes. On NeoForge it needs Kotlin for Forge instead. Both must be built for Minecraft 1.21.1.

Do I need Cobblemon on the server?

Yes. Cobblemon must be installed on both the server and every client, with matching versions and the same loader.

Is there an official Cobblemon server?

No. The team lists community servers on its website and in its Discord, and you can run your own on any host that supports Fabric or NeoForge for 1.21.1.

How do I make Poké Balls in Cobblemon?

A basic Poké Ball takes four red apricorns and a copper ingot. Apricorns grow on trees in the wild. Better balls use iron, gold and rarer materials.

Why do some Pokémon look like a doll?

Species without a finished model appear as a substitute doll. They can still spawn and battle normally.

Is Cobblemon available for Bedrock Edition?

No. The official installation guide states that Cobblemon is only available on Minecraft: Java Edition.

What are Alpha Pokémon?

Alphas arrived in 1.8. They are larger, stronger and more aggressive than normal Pokémon, lead herds, always know a TM move and adapt to your party. You can defeat one for rewards or try to catch it.
