Where OptiFine currently stands on Minecraft versions changes often, and a lot of pages online get it wrong, so let's get this out of the way first. The latest stable release right now is built for Minecraft 1.21.11. Minecraft 26.1.2 only has preview builds so far, and there's no official OptiFine build for Minecraft 26.2 yet. If you searched for OptiFine 26.2 hoping it was out, it isn't. Check the official downloads page rather than trusting a random site that claims otherwise, and see the version section further down for what your actual options are.
OptiFine bundles a handful of different things into one installer: performance optimizations that work without any setup, a Video Settings menu with far more options than vanilla exposes, built-in shader pack support, and a set of resource-pack features that let texture creators do things vanilla textures can't. It's grown a lot over the years, so it's less one single feature and more a toolkit.
OptiFine's own FAQ claims FPS improvements of 200% or more are common, with worst-case performance landing around the same as vanilla Minecraft. That's OptiFine's official number, not something we've verified ourselves, and it comes with real caveats. The FAQ itself admits that turning on higher-quality settings like Render Distance Extreme, Antialiasing, or Anisotropic Filtering can bring your FPS back down. So can an FPS limiter, or a detailed HD texture pack using features like Connected Textures or Custom Animations. Installing OptiFine after other mods instead of last is another common culprit.
How much you actually gain depends on your hardware, your Minecraft version, your settings, and whatever else is installed. You shouldn't need to configure anything out of the box to notice a difference, but the tooltips in Video Settings will tell you which options favor performance if you want to push further.

OptiFine isn't a shader pack itself; it's the software that lets shader packs run. Shader support is built directly in, so once it's installed, you can drop a compatible shader pack into your shaderpacks folder and switch it on from Video Settings without adding anything extra.
This is one of the most confused topics in Minecraft modding, so here's the breakdown:
Not every shader pack works on every OptiFine version. If a pack behaves oddly or won't load, check that it's built for a version close to the one you're running.
OptiFine also extends what resource packs can do. Texture creators can use OptiFine-specific features like Connected Textures, so glass, bookshelves, and similar blocks tile together instead of showing visible seams, along with Custom Entity Models and Custom Entity Textures for reskinning mobs, random mob textures, custom skies, emissive textures that glow regardless of lighting, and custom animations. These only kick in if the resource pack you're using was built to use them. Installing OptiFine on its own doesn't change your textures.
OptiFine comes in three editions:
OptiFine installs as a standalone mod. No Forge, no Fabric, nothing else required. The installer creates its own profile in the Minecraft Launcher and runs on its own from there.
You can also run it alongside Forge if you want to combine it with Forge mods. This is optional, and it only works when the specific OptiFine build you're using lists a compatible Forge version. Not every release has one, especially recent previews. Where a build does support Forge, install OptiFine after your other Forge mods. Installing it out of order is a common source of problems.
OptiFine doesn't have an official Fabric version, and there's no official NeoForge or Quilt build either. Fabric players after OptiFine-style features usually end up on Sodium for rendering performance, paired with Iris for shaders, both built for Fabric from scratch. A third-party project called OptiFabric tries to bridge OptiFine onto Fabric, but it's unofficial, isn't made by the OptiFine team, and has a history of breaking with Minecraft updates. Treat it as a workaround, not a supported option.
OptiFine and Sodium don't run together. Both replace core parts of Minecraft's rendering, so they conflict instead of combining. If you want OptiFine's features but you're already on Sodium, pairing Sodium with Iris is the practical route rather than trying to bolt OptiFine on top. For a game-logic boost alongside either setup, Lithium is worth adding too; it optimizes different systems (physics, mob AI, ticking) than OptiFine or Sodium touch.
These two get compared constantly. OptiFine is one all-in-one mod that runs standalone or with Forge, bundles shader support and resource-pack features directly, and covers a very wide range of Minecraft versions going back years. Sodium is a Fabric/NeoForge rendering mod usually paired with separate tools (Iris for shaders, Lithium for game logic), and it tends to reach new Minecraft versions faster, though that speed comes from leaning on that modular setup rather than doing everything itself.
If you're chasing the newest Minecraft version, including 26.2, where OptiFine currently has nothing, Sodium and Iris are the more current option. If you're on an older, well-supported version and want one mod that does it all with optional Forge integration, OptiFine still holds up there.

OptiFine has taken anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to catch up after a new Minecraft release in the past, so if you're after the newest version, check the official downloads page directly rather than assume a build already exists.
OptiFine is only distributed through its official website, optifine.net. Downloads elsewhere (bundled installers, third-party mirrors, "OptiFine 26.2" claims on random sites) aren't something we can vouch for, so be skeptical of any site claiming to have a build the official page doesn't list.
