About Iris Shaders

Iris is the mod that lets Minecraft load shader packs. That's the whole job. It isn't a shader pack itself, and it isn't a mod loader either: it sits between the two, and mixing those up is the single most common reason people get stuck installing shaders.

Here's the stack, top to bottom. You have Minecraft: Java Edition. You have a mod loader like Fabric or NeoForge, which lets the game run mods at all. Iris is one of those mods, and its purpose is to load shader packs. The shader pack (Complementary, Sildur's Vibrant, whatever you've picked) is a separate file that Iris reads. And bundled alongside Iris comes Sodium, which rewrites Minecraft's renderer to claw back performance.

The project is open source under the LGPL-3.0-only licence. It was created by a developer known as coderbot and is now maintained by IMS212 along with the wider Iris contributor team, who describe it as built by the community, for the community.

What Is Iris Shaders?

Officially, Iris describes itself as an open-source shader mod for Minecraft: Java Edition, and on Modrinth as a modern shader pack loader designed to be compatible with existing OptiFine shader packs.

That compatibility point matters. Shader packs have been written in OptiFine's format for years, and Iris loads them without the pack needing a rewrite. It also supports Iris-enhanced packs, ones built to use features Iris adds on top of the OptiFine format.

Iris exists because of a specific problem. OptiFine was the standard way to run shaders for a long time, but it's closed-source, has a history of clashing with other mods, and can't run alongside Sodium. The older ShadersMod stopped being updated after 1.12. So Iris was built to load existing shader packs on modern Minecraft while keeping mod compatibility and performance intact.

It's client-side only. Servers don't need it, and it doesn't change gameplay, just how your game draws the world.

Iris and Sodium

This trips people up constantly, so here's the accurate version.

Iris ships with Sodium. The official site puts it plainly: Iris includes Sodium for optimal performance, out of the box. The official Iris Installer downloads and installs both together; you don't choose between them.

If you install manually instead, from Modrinth or CurseForge, the official download page states next to both options that you will also need Sodium. So Sodium isn't something you can skip on the manual route either.

The two do completely different jobs, which is why they pair so well. Sodium replaces Minecraft's rendering engine with a faster one. Iris adds shader support on top. Neither duplicates the other's work, and Iris was designed around Sodium from the start; recent Iris releases even list which Sodium version they've been updated against.

What Shader Packs Work With Iris?

The official position is that Iris supports almost all shader packs. The project also publishes two honest documents on its GitHub: a list of shader packs that aren't supported, and a list of limitations in Iris that can't be fixed. Worth a look if a specific pack misbehaves.

Two packs we've covered in detail both work with Iris:

  • Complementary Shaders: its official installation instructions are written around Iris, and the Complementary Installer bundles Iris with it.
  • Sildur's Vibrant Shaders: lists Iris as a supported platform, and also works with Angelica, an Iris fork.
  • SEUS: predates Iris entirely, and loads through it because Iris reads OptiFine-format packs. Iris documents PTGI HRR 3 as working with motion blur disabled.

One thing to know about resource packs: most work fine alongside shaders, but resource packs that use core shaders (the kind that work without any mods) won't function while a shader pack is enabled.

Supported Minecraft Versions and Mod Loaders

Iris supports Minecraft 1.16.5 and everything newer, including the latest releases. The official FAQ notes that if a version is missing from the installer, it's usually because a later release covers servers on that version anyway.

On mod loaders, the official position is specific:

  • Fabric: supported from Minecraft 1.16.5 upward
  • NeoForge: supported from Minecraft 1.21.1 upward
  • Forge: not supported

Forge isn't an oversight. The developers have explained that supporting it properly would mean not just running on Forge but staying compatible with sprawling Forge modpacks, and the Forge toolchain doesn't sit well with a mod that patches as much of the game as Iris does. That time goes into the Fabric and NeoForge builds instead.

Quilt is also listed as a platform on Iris's Modrinth page, though the official FAQ only names Fabric and NeoForge. If you're on Quilt, it's available; just be aware the project's own documentation is written around the other two.

Iris Performance

Three separate things get muddled together here, so let's split them:

  • Iris loads shader packs. That's its function. It isn't a performance mod.
  • Sodium, which ships with it, is the performance component, a rewritten renderer that improves frame rates.
  • The shader pack is what costs you frames. Shaders add substantial rendering work, so enabling one always means lower FPS than vanilla.

So an Iris setup generally runs shaders better than the alternatives, but that's Sodium doing the lifting, not Iris itself. And no shader setup makes Minecraft faster than running it with no shaders at all.

If performance is tight, the lever to pull is the shader pack's own settings. Most packs ship with quality presets (Sildur's splits into separate preset downloads, Complementary offers profiles from Potato to Ultra), and dropping down a level costs far less than you'd think visually.

Iris vs OptiFine

They can't be used together (installing both will crash the game), so this is a genuine either/or.

Where Iris wins: it's open source, it works alongside Sodium, it keeps pace with new Minecraft releases quickly, and it plays well with modern Fabric and NeoForge mod setups. On current Minecraft versions it's often the only working option, since OptiFine has historically taken weeks to months to catch up after a release.

Where OptiFine still has a case: it's an all-in-one package, and a lot of what it does has nothing to do with shaders: connected textures, custom entity models and textures, emissive textures, zoom, dynamic lights, and a much deeper video settings menu. Iris doesn't replicate those. If your favourite resource pack depends on OptiFine-specific features, or you're playing an older version where OptiFine is well supported, it's a reasonable choice.

Iris also publishes its own list of unfixable limitations, which is worth reading rather than assuming feature parity. For most people running shaders on a recent Minecraft version, Iris is the practical pick; for players who want OptiFine's extra graphics features specifically, it isn't a straight replacement.

Mod Compatibility

The official line is that most mods work with Iris. A few rendering-related mods need attention:

  • Sodium: ships with Iris, no action needed.
  • Nvidium: can be installed alongside Iris, but it disables itself whenever shaders are enabled. Not a bug.
  • Distant Horizons and Voxy: work with some shader packs only. The shader pack has to explicitly support them. Sildur's Vibrant is one that does.
  • OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan mods: incompatible, and will crash the game. Don't install them alongside Iris.
  • Indium: only relevant below Minecraft 1.21.1. On 1.21.1 and newer it should not be used. Plenty of older guides still tell you to install it; that advice is out of date.

Hacked clients like Meteor and Wurst aren't supported. Clients such as Lunar may have their own Iris support, but any problems specific to those go to their teams rather than the Iris developers.

Does Iris Work on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

No. Iris is a Java Edition mod, and there's no Bedrock version.

The Iris team are blunt about why this matters: Bedrock can't be modded the way Java can because of platform restrictions, and they warn that any Bedrock shader mod on mobile that doesn't use Bedrock's own built-in features is a scam. If you're searching for "Iris shaders Bedrock" and finding download sites offering it, that's what you're looking at.

Bedrock on Windows does have legitimate options (the Iris FAQ points people toward BetterRTX), but Iris itself isn't one of them.

Do You Need Fabric API?

No. Fabric API isn't listed as a dependency for Iris, required or optional. You can run Iris without it.

That said, most other Fabric mods do depend on Fabric API, so if you're building out a modpack around your shader setup, you'll likely end up installing it for those mods rather than for Iris.

Common Iris Shaders Problems

  • The shader pack doesn't show up. Nearly always because the zip was extracted. Shader packs stay zipped. Check it's in the shaderpacks folder too, and refresh the list.
  • There's no Shader Packs menu at all. Iris didn't load: usually the wrong profile was launched, or the mod isn't in the mods folder.
  • The game crashes on launch. Check for OptiFine, Canvas, or a Vulkan mod. Those are incompatible and will crash it.
  • Crashes on 1.21.1 or newer with Indium installed. Remove Indium. It's only for older versions now.
  • Distant Horizons or Voxy render oddly with shaders on. Your shader pack needs to support them explicitly. Not every pack does.
  • Nvidium seems to do nothing. Working as intended: it switches off when shaders are active.
  • A specific shader won't load. Some packs don't support some hardware. Check the project's unsupported shader pack list first, then contact the pack's developer. If it looks like an Iris bug, the Iris Discord is the place.
  • Unsupported Minecraft version. Iris starts at 1.16.5, and NeoForge builds only exist from 1.21.1 upward.

Where to Get Iris Safely

The official website is irisshaders.dev. From there you'll find the installer, plus the project's official Modrinth and CurseForge pages and the source code on GitHub.

Be a little careful with search results. Iris is popular enough to attract sites using near-identical names that present themselves as official, and older mirrors of the project site still float around with outdated instructions. If you didn't arrive via irisshaders.dev, Modrinth, CurseForge, or the project's GitHub, it's worth double-checking.

How to Download Iris Shaders for Minecraft

Everything official comes from irisshaders.dev. The download page gives you four routes, and the difference between them comes down to how much it does for you.

  • Windows .exe installer: the simplest option on Windows.
  • Universal JAR installer: the same installer in a form that works on any platform.
  • Modrinth: described by the project as the recommended mod platform. You'll need Sodium separately.
  • CurseForge: also official. Again, you'll need Sodium separately.

That last point is the practical difference. The installer downloads and installs Iris and Sodium together. Going the Modrinth or CurseForge route means grabbing Sodium yourself; the official download page says so directly next to both options.

If you're not comfortable managing mod files by hand, use the installer. It exists precisely so you don't have to think about any of this.

You'll also want at least one shader pack, downloaded separately from its own project page. Iris on its own gives you the menu but nothing to put in it.

How to Install Iris Shaders for Minecraft

Installing Iris with the Iris Installer

  1. Download the Iris Installer from the official website, the Windows .exe or the Universal JAR.
  2. Run it.
  3. Choose your Minecraft version.
  4. Click install. The installer sets up Iris and Sodium together.
  5. Open the Minecraft Launcher and launch the profile the installer created.
  6. Once in the game, go to Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. If that menu is there, Iris is running.

Launch the game once at this point even if you have no shader packs yet; it makes sure everything is set up before you start adding files.

Installing Iris manually

If you already have a modded setup, or you'd rather place files yourself:

  1. Install a supported mod loader for your Minecraft version: Fabric for 1.16.5 and up, or NeoForge for 1.21.1 and up. Run it once so your mods folder is created.
  2. Download Iris from the official Modrinth or CurseForge page, matching your Minecraft version and loader.
  3. Download Sodium for the same Minecraft version and loader. The official Iris download page states you'll need it on this route.
  4. Put both .jar files into your mods folder.
  5. Launch the game through your modded profile and check for the Shader Packs menu in Video Settings.

How to install a shader pack with Iris

  1. Download a shader pack: Complementary and Sildur's Vibrant both work with Iris.
  2. Leave the zip file zipped. Extracting it is the most common reason a pack never appears.
  3. In-game, open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs, then use the button in that menu to open your shaderpacks folder.
  4. Drop the zip into that folder.
  5. Go back to the Shader Packs menu in Minecraft. Refresh it if the pack isn't listed yet.
  6. Click the pack to enable it.

How to change shader packs

You can keep as many packs in the shaderpacks folder as you like and switch between them from the Shader Packs menu: no reinstalling, no restarting. Handy for testing which one your hardware handles best, or for keeping a lighter pack around for when you're doing something demanding.

Most packs also have their own settings, reachable from the same menu once the pack is selected. That's usually a better first move than swapping packs entirely if performance is the problem.

Common installation problems

  • Pack doesn't appear in the list. Check the zip wasn't extracted, confirm it's in shaderpacks and not mods, then refresh the menu.
  • No Shader Packs menu. Iris isn't loaded. Confirm you launched the right profile, and that Iris is actually in your mods folder if you installed manually.
  • Crash on launch. OptiFine, Canvas, or a Vulkan mod in the same setup will crash the game. So will Indium on Minecraft 1.21.1 or newer.
  • Installed manually and nothing works. Check Sodium is there. The manual route needs it alongside Iris.
  • Wrong version. Iris builds are tied to specific Minecraft versions and loaders: a Fabric build won't run on NeoForge, and vice versa.
